The community is situated at an altitude between 450 and 950 metres above sea level and it includes the four valleys of the "Schwarza" in the west over the "Mettma" and the "Schlücht" to the "Steina" in the north (the north-south expansion max 10 kilometres; west-east max 15 kilometres).The valleys cutting down into the primary rock, pass through the territory in direction north to south and produce a strong dismemberment, which is shown in the differences of mentality and also in an special independence of the districts. The community of Ühlingen-Birkendorf with a total area of 7706 hectares (3145 ha of this is wood land) belongs to the largest communities of the rural district Waldshut.
